Frontotemporal Dementia and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Case report

Abstract

It has been reported that among 15% of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis patients may present cognitive alterations that are framed in frontotemporal lobar degeneration. It is exposed a case of a female patient with difficulty to express herself and behavior disorders. Studies of brain electrical activity, imaging and neuropsychological evaluation were indicated. Frontotemporal dementia is proposed as a diagnosis. Evolutionarily, the patient shows dysphagia and great difficulty to articulate the language. Physical examination revealed fasciculations in the tongue and extremities, it is decided to carry an electromyography. It was concluded that a thoroughly interrogation and a physical examination are the key to orientate oneself in the diagnosis of both entities. In those cases, the prognosis is very unfavorable.
