Non-alcoholic fatty liver and carotid median intima thickness in hypertensive patients
Keywords:
arterial hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liverAbstract
Introduction. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver and arterial hypertension are associated with an early increase in carotid intima-media thickness and a higher prevalence of plaques. This increase exists even in the absence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic syndrome.
Objective. To describe the characteristics of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and carotid intima-media thickness in hypertensive patients.
Methods. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out at Surgical Medical Research Center from September 2019 to December 2020. The medical records of hypertensive patients were reviewed.
Results. 50 patients were studied. There was a predominance of the male sex. 42% presented hepatic steatosis. Increased carotid median intima thickness was found in both arteries, predominantly on the right (61.9%).
Conclusions. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was a frequent finding in patients with arterial hypertension. In hypertensive patients with hepatic steatosis, there was an increase in carotid median intima thickness and the presence of atheromatous plaques.
