Laparoscopic approach in the treatment of colorectal tumors

Abstract

Introduction. Colorectal cancer maintains a high incidence in western countries and is the most common in the digestive tract, occupying the fourth place in diagnostic frequency. Surgical treatment is the main therapeutic option with curative intent, which can be laparoscopic or conventional.

Objective. To evaluate the advantages of the laparoscopic approach over the conventional one in the surgical treatment of colorectal tumors in the CIMEQ, in the period between 2015-2020.

Methods. A descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study was performed in 60 patients undergoing these surgeries.

Results. 60 % were female and patients in the 60-69 year group prevailed (47 %). The ascending colon was the most frequent location (40 %) and 95 % corresponded to an adenocarcinoma. The average surgical time in conventional surgery was 220 minutes; less bleeding (150 milliliters), hospital stay (5 days) and morbidity (30 %) in laparoscopic approach. No mortality was reported.

Conclusion. Laparoscopic surgery offers quantifiable advantages and excellent results, in favor of less blood loss, morbidity, postoperative hospital stay compared to conventional, despite having statistically no significant surgical time.
