Creation and implementation of the National Assistance Network for Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthesis in Cuba, 20 years later
Abstract
Introduction. In Cuba, before the Revolution, Maxillofacial Prosthesis was not performed, therefore the National Program of Face Rehabilitation and Maxillofacial Prosthesis was proposed and prepared, based on the creation of the National Health Care Net, which provides Multidisciplinary Assistance to the patients with craniomaxillofacial defects. Methods. This Assistance Program was based on an epidemiological study about the needs of maxillofacial prosthesis that lead to the knowledge and evaluation of the problem´s size and also introduce the demographic variables that are essential for this research. Results. The need of human and material resources as well as the categorization of health services were analyzed, the national system of operation of the Net was established, which gives coverage to the prothetic bucomaxillofacial needs of the Cuban population. Conclusions. The National System for the Net´s functioning was implemented, which gave coverage to the prosthetic bucomaxillofacial needs of the Cuban population.
