Abstract

Gastrointestinal disorders are very frequent in the critical patient. Gastrointestinal dysfunction is associated with abnormalities in intestinal motor function, alterations in the microbiota, loss of integrity of the intestinal barrier, bacterial translocation and alteration of the important immune function of the intestine: this local damage can affect other organs, becoming involved in the etiological process of the critical illness and leading to the appearance of a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and multiorgan failure (FMO). Describe the main intestinal disorders in the critical patient and the updated treatment of the same. A review study of the topic “intestinal failure in the critical patient” was carried out. The search was done in electronic bases (PubMed, OvidSP, Science Direct, MD Consult.) Until September 2019. Through this review we were able to describe the main classifications of acute gastrointestinal failure, the functional and structural alterations that it suffers the intestine of the critical patient, as well as its most effective treatment. Acute gastrointestinal failure in the critical patient has an important role in the occurrence of sepsis and multiorgan failure. Recognizing it is essential, since critical illness alters the motility and integrity of the intestine.
