Asma Bronquial: Sibilancia que aun cobra vidas
Abstract
El asma bronquial puede afectar a individuos de cualquier edad, raza y área geográfica, aunque se ha visto con mayor incidencia en la mujer y países desarrollados. Lo padece del 3 al 7 % de la población adulta y los que debutan después de los 50 años de edad, presentan peor pronóstico, siendo el diagnóstico en el adulto mayor más difícil por la comorbilidad, que los acompaña. El nivel escolar puede influir en su evolución así como el ambiente laboral. Constituye un problema de salud en los servicios de urgencia y consulta externa y un alto costo para la salud pública en medicamentos y hospitalización. La no adherencia al tratamiento intercrisis, conlleva a un mal control y mal pronóstico de asma grave. La medicación con esteroides inhalados se asocia a mejoría clínica, capacidad funcional pulmonar, menor morbilidad y con ello calidad de vida.
