Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, the possible relationship between an elevated leukogram and its consequent influence on the increase in mortality and the degree of functional dependence due to cerebral infarction has been addressed. Therefore, the calculation of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio could be an indicator for the prognosis of these patients.

Objective: To describe the distribution of patients according to neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio values in the first 24 hours of hospitalization, hospital mortality, and functional dependence due to cerebral infarction.

Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was conducted from January 2024 to December 2024 at the "Capitán Roberto Rodríguez Fernández" Provincial General Teaching Hospital in Morón. The sample consisted of 142 patients, and the sample consisted of 90 patients using non-probability sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio was calculated for all patients included in the study. Descriptive statistical methods and percentage calculations were used to express the research results.

Results: 87.5 % of all deceased patients and 57.1 % of patients with a Rankin scale score between 4 and 6 had a neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio calculated upon hospital admission greater than 3.

Conclusions: The risk of death and the Rankin scale score were higher when the neutrophil-lymphocyte index calculated in the first 24 hours of admission was higher.
