Cervical intraepithelial lesions in patients under 25 years of age

Introduction: In Cuba, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death from malignant tumors in women, with 34 deaths between the ages of 20 and 39, with a close etiological relationship to human papillomavirus infection.
Objective: To delve deeper into the etiology of cervical cancer, its early detection, and prevention.
Method: A bibliographic review was conducted, including articles from journals indexed in databases such as Scopus, SciElo, PubMed/Medline, and the Google Scholar search engine. The search covered a period from 2014 to December 2024, and due to their importance, sources from earlier periods were used. Thirty original articles in english and spanish were reviewed, and 24 were referenced. The search terms cervical cancer, human papillomavirus, and adolescents were used.
Development: The onset of first sexual intercourse at an early age, before the age of 20, is addressed worldwide from an epidemiological perspective, and there is a general consensus that these relationships in adolescents predispose to cervical lesions. Human papillomavirus infection is the main risk factor associated with cervical cancer and its precursors.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis and adequate risk factor control are the necessary tools to reduce morbidity and mortality attributable to cervical cancer.
