Introduction: Enhanced recovery protocols after surgery are a set of medical practices designed to optimize patients' recovery after surgery.
Objective: To analyse the effectiveness of implementing an enhanced recovery protocol after surgery in patients undergoing colorectal surgery.
Methods: A multicenter, analytical, ambispective, longitudinal study was carried out at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Provincial University Clinical Surgical Hospital and the General Calixto García University Hospital, during the period from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2023. The universe was made up of 860 patients operated on for different colorectal conditions, of which a sample of 64 was obtained, using stratified random sampling.
Results: Those over 60 years of age (43.8%) and men (54.9%) predominated. Postoperative complications were more prevalent in those who did not apply the enhanced recovery protocols after surgery (45.3%), with a higher rate of reoperations (21.9%) and longer hospital stay (8 days). The readmissions rate was 8.8% and mortality was 5.9%.
Conclusions: In patients who underwent enhanced recovery protocols after surgery, postoperative complications had a lower incidence, reoperation rates were lower, hospital stay was shorter, they had fewer readmissions, and lower mortality.
