Stigma and discrimination towards people with mental illness in health professionals

Introduction: Mental health is a public health problem worldwide and causes economic, social and personal costs for those who suffer from mental illness, are stigmatized and discriminated against. Certain prejudices persist among health professionals towards these patients, a problem that remains invisible in society.
Objective: Identify the main elements of discrimination and stigmatization of health personnel towards people with mental illness.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe made up of health professionals from the “Dr. Luis Díaz Soto” Hospital from October 2022 to March 2023. The sample selected by non-probabilistic sampling with 70 professionals. The variables: sociodemographic data, and application of the MICA-4 and SDS surveys. Summary measures were used for qualitative and quantitative variables with a 95% confidence interval. For associations between variables, linear regressions and Mann Whitney U tests were used using the Microsoft Excel database and the SPSS statistical package. The ethical principles for biomedical research were met.
Results: 49.2% of those surveyed consider that mental illnesses cannot be recovered, 53.6% consider the patients dangerous, and 52.2% consider it normal to use pejorative terms when referring to the sick.
Conclusions: Prejudices associated with psychiatric stigma and discrimination with the use of common derogatory language when referring to people with mental illness are identified in health professionals.
