Abstract

Introduction: The word myiasis refers to the infestation of vertebrate animal tissues by fly larvae of various species, which can infest living or necrotic tissue. Based on their location, cutaneous, cavitary, and visceral myiasis can be distinguished. The oral cavity is rarely affected by this disease.

Objective: To present a rare case of oral myiasis caused by the common housefly.

Case presentation: This is a 34-year-old male patient with a history of chronic encephalopathy with mental retardation. He was referred from his health care area and urgently evaluated for oral cavitary myiasis. Surgical treatment was performed due to the septic case. General orotracheal anesthesia was administered. The oral cavity was examined, and the larvae were removed. He was treated with parenteral antibacterials as an inpatient, with satisfactory progress.

Conclusions: The combination of surgical treatment and parenteral therapeutic coverage led to the satisfactory resolution of the patient's initial clinical picture. The patient's encephalopathy and poor oral hygiene were the triggering factors for the septic process.
