Characterization of cerebrovascular disease in patients of the General Hospital of Référence

Introduction: Cerebrovascular disease is a pathology that invariably involves the blood vessels that supply the brain.
Objective: To characterize the behavior of cerebrovascular disease in the intensive care unit of the General Hospital of Référence, Nigeria.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional research was carried out in the period 2022-2023. The sample was obtained from a simple random sampling, 384 patients, 150 were used. Data for the study were extracted from the medical records and stored in a Microsoft Office Excel 2010 database created for this purpose. For the analysis of the quantitative variables, the summary and central tendency measures (absolute number, mean and percentage) were performed. For the qualitative variables, absolute values and percentage were used.
Results: 39 % of the admissions were for cerebrovascular disease, most of them were male and in the age group 71-80 years. The average stay was prolonged for more than 10 days, and 60% of admissions ventilated. All patients underwent a diagnostic skull computed tomography scan. From the etiological point of view, ischemic cerebral infarction predominated in 45% of the patients, the complication that most frequently affected them was nosocomial respiratory sepsis. The most frequently isolated germs were gram-negative.
Conclusions: cerebrovascular disease has different subtypes, with dissimilar clinical manifestations, and the diagnostic approach and therefore the treatment depend on this, both in the acute phase and in secondary prevention.
