Behavior of atherogenic risk factors in patients with periodontitis

Introduction: atherosclerosis and periodontitis constitute serious public health problems. The high mortality rate from heart and cerebrovascular diseases demands studies on emerging risk factors, to direct efforts toward their prevention and control.
Objective: to characterize the behavior of atherogenic risk factors in patients with periodontitis.
Método: estudio observacional, descriptivo de corte transversal en pacientes de la Clínica Estomatológica “Ormani Arenado”, Pinar del Río durante el período 2022-2023. Universo: 285 pacientes con diagnóstico de enfermedad periodontal. Muestra intencional no probabilística, 120 pacientes según criterios de inclusión. Como medidas estadísticas de resumen se emplearon frecuencias absolutas, porcentuales y Chi cuadrado.
Results: severe periodontitis (43.3 %) and generalized (51.7 %) predominated. The main risk factors were smoking (68.3 %) and high blood pressure (52.5 %) in severe periodontitis. Smoking prevailed in patients in the group aged 65 and over (58.5 %), male (64.6 %) and mixed race (56.1 %); as well as patients who drink and smoke (78.8 %), sedentary patients (55.8 %), with poor oral hygiene (59.6%) in the presence of severe periodontitis.
Conclusions: the sample was characterized by a high incidence of atherogenic risk factors and severe generalized periodontitis, mainly in smokers and males. The severity and extent of the disease increased with advancing age and in patients with unhealthy behavioral habits such as poor oral hygiene, toxic habits and a combination of alcohol and tobacco consumption.
