Introduction: Indeterminate thyroid nodules and the approach to follow when dealing with them represent a problem of care for specialists in multidisciplinary groups, with a risk between 15 and 60 % of cancer diagnosis in the post-surgical biopsy.
Objective: To characterize patients with indeterminate thyroid nodule who required surgical treatment.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the “Dr. Enrique Cabrera”, between the years 2019-2020. 25 patients with indeterminate thyroid nodule were included. Clinical, biochemical, ultrasonography and histological variables were analyzed using frequency and summary measures, as well as the X2 proportion comparison test (chi square). A level of statistical significance p≤0.05 was accepted, with a reliability level of 95 %.
Results: The average age was 52.4 years, with a predominance of women (80 %). 8 (32 %) subjects had low TSH levels. The most frequent characteristics of the nodule were: palpable (100 %); 3cm medium size; hyperechogenic (72 %); vascularized and longer than wide (52 %); presence of microcalcifications; and Bethesda grade III (76 %). In 7 (28 %) patients, the postsurgical biopsy was carcinoma and the characteristics of the nodule coincided with the previous results.
Conclusions: The characteristics of patients with indeterminate thyroid nodule who required surgical treatment coincided with the risk factors for thyroid carcinoma, so their individual or integrated influence on its emergence must be further explored.
