Abstract

La reemergencia de la Tuberculosis (TB) en el mundo ha despertado el interés en el entendimiento de la epidemiología y patogénesis de esta enfermedad. Con el uso y el establecimiento de la epidemiologia molecular como nueva disciplina se adicionó otra dimensión a la epidemiologia clásica de la TB y ha incrementado el conocimiento de la dinámica de la transmisión de M. tuberculosis dentro de una población. El descubrimiento de secuencias de ácido desoxirribonucléico (ADN) repetitivas en el cromosoma de Mycobacterium tuberculosis, como la IS6110, ha permitido desarrollar técnicas moleculares confiables en la caracterización de cepas de esta especie, así como la determinación de linajes y su distribución geográfica. En Cuba ha sido útil en el estudio de brotes en Instituciones Cerradas y la determinación de los patrones genéticos circulantes en el país. Aún existen grandes retos que implican incorporar la Epidemiología Molecular en los Programas de Prevención y Control de la TB.
