Consumo de tabaco y enfermedad periodontal

Abstract

 

Introducción. El tabaquismo constituye uno de los factores ambientales más influyentes en la susceptibilidad del individuo para desarrollar enfermedad periodontal y para la progresión de la misma, además de constituir un impedimento para una respuesta normal al tratamiento. Métodos. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal. en 96 pacientes fumadores, mayores de 15 años de edad, con enfermedad periodontal crónica, que acudieron a la consulta en la Facultad de Estomatología. Se les realizó examen bucal y encuesta, previo consentimiento para participar en la investigación. Se estudiaron variables como: gravedad de la enfermedad periodontal, edad de comienzo de la adicción, dependencia física, motivación inicial, actual, así como para abandonar el consumo. Resultados. El 53,1 % de los pacientes presentaron gingivitis, el 68,7 % se inició en la adicción en las edades de 11-19 años; con una dependencia física moderada (51,0 %), la motivación para abandonar el consumo fue baja (65,6 %), la imitación (46,9 %) fue la motivación psicosocial predominante en el inicio de la adicción, y el placer (42,7%) la motivación  actual. Conclusiones. La mayoría de los pacientes presentó gingivitis y se inició en la adicción durante la adolescencia. Predominó el consumo de cigarro con una moderada dependencia física y baja motivación para abandonar el consumo .La curiosidad constituyó la motivación  psicosocial predominante en el inicio de la adicción,  y el placer, la motivación  actual.
