Editorial Process and Peer Review (The peer review process is open).
The workflow is as follows:
Articles submitted to the online platform are initially reviewed by an executive editor who performs an initial review to verify compliance with the policies and instructions established for authors (2-3 weeks). If the article is accepted for review within a period of 3-4 weeks, it proceeds to the peer review process. It is sent to two external reviewers who will render a judgment on the scientific value, novelty, and adherence to the methodology, depending on the research modality, within a timeframe not exceeding 8 weeks. In the event of a discrepancy between the two initially convened peer reviewers, a third reviewer will be invited to act as the deciding factor. Once the reviewers submit their opinions, the editor sends them to the authors. The latter must submit the modifications according to the recommendations made. After reviewing the revised article, the Editorial Board, along with the results of the external review, issues a decision on the article being evaluated. The article may be accepted for publication, published with modifications (minor or substantial), re-evaluated, or rejected. The Editorial Board's decision is not appealable.
Proposed articles are sent to two reviewers external to the sponsoring body and the Editorial Committee, who will assess the article's scientific value, novelty, and compliance with the instructions to authors described in these policies. In the event of a discrepancy between the two initially invited peer reviewers, a third reviewer will be invited to act as the deciding factor. The decision to approve, revise, or reject is communicated by the peer reviewers to the editor. If the article is rejected, the peer reviewers send the editor the results of the evaluation form with their suggestions for improvements that could be made to the article. If accepted, the article undergoes editorial review.
Each article is reviewed according to online review guidelines specific to the types of articles accepted by the journal, which can be requested by authors and reviewers.
The maximum time elapsed between the arrival of the article and the first response from the referees is eight weeks. Likewise, the time between receipt of the article and its acceptance for publication is six months to one year. This time may be extended depending on the final approval of the submitted proposal or a delay in response from the author or reviewer. Considering that external peers perform their work selflessly, this process is flexible. The dates of receipt and approval are indicated at the end of each article, with the exception of articles in the editorial, obituaries, events, and recognition sections.
The entire peer review process is carried out through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform for editorial management automation. Documents received through any other means are not accepted.

History of the Journal
The journal "Investigaciones Medicoquirúrgicas" has been published by the Center for Medical-Surgical Research (CIMEQ) since 1991.
This journal emerged in the 1990s, a time when the country was going through a difficult economic period. Most national scientific journals ceased circulation, and the center's professionals were unable to publicize their research results.
Thus, in 1991, the first introductory issue was published, and it was officially founded in 1995, when it was registered in the National Registry of Periodical Publications. In 1996, it was assigned ISSN code 1025-7292 by the ISSN International Center in Paris.
Initially, precisely due to the existing economic difficulties, it had an unstable periodicity; in 2006, it became regular with two issues per year.
As can be seen, starting in 2009, the journal's numbering was reorganized, ordering it consecutively by annual volume. This information was communicated to readers in the first issue of the year.
The journal publishes development programs, research results, original articles and bibliographic reviews by specialty, as well as the results of clinical trials and other forms of scientific knowledge, conducted by professionals from the institution and other related entities, which allows for national and international scientific and technical exchange.
Summaries of presentations given at the institution's Scientific Conference, such as lectures, roundtables, and posters, are also published.
Since its inception, the Editorial Committee has been composed of renowned professors and academics from the institution, including a Director, an Editor-in-Chief, an Assistant Editor, an Editorial Committee, and a significant group of advisors, responsible for the selection and scientific analysis of the various works to be published.
The graphic design and layout, as well as the photography, are carried out by CIMEQ editorial staff.
Beginning in 2007, given the country's technological development and the advantages of rapid communication offered by digital publishing, its electronic dissemination began on the website http://www.sld.cu/sitios/cimeq/index.pht
At the beginning of 2010, the Editorial Committee was modified, establishing a General Director, an Editorial Director, Editorial Coordinators, an Editorial Committee, Honorary Members, and Collaborators, in recognition of important professors who participated in the development of the publication.
In 2022, the journal Investigaciones Medicoquirúrgicas welcomed the continuous flow of scientific publications, in a single volume with two issues per year.
In the second half of 2003, the editorial committee decided to modify this frequency, in accordance with suggestions from various international databases, and discontinued its biannual publication with the publication of an annual volume.
All of the above makes the journal an important source of scientific publications and information on the application of new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
